Buffalo, NY – Argus Gallery is pleased to announce Integration, an exhibition of new paintings by Buffalo based artist Muhammad Z. Zaman. These works continue to embody a theme that has been evident in Zaman’s practice – combination.

The artist creates aggregates of language as well as categories and styles of art making. The text is the most stimulating example of this combination – Zaman has formed his own written language, a combination of his native Bengali, Arabic, and English. Graffiti meets fine art and Eastern alphabets meets Western alphabets. Each separate element merges to create stunning layered depths.

Zaman’s practice stems from a desire to bring different, and at times socially opposing, cultures together to highlight the beauty in each, and to call to attention a need for understanding. Oddly enough this is communicated via language that isn’t understandable, but that exact illegibility is what helps create a universal experience. Unable to read the text, the viewer is left to contemplate the intent of the artist and to glean meaning by focusing on the layers, both in the form of monochromatic and colorful applications of paint. There is room for both intellectual reads and more instinctive responses.

Muhammad Z. Zaman is a Buffalo-based painter specializing in calligraphy and is a resident artist at Buffalo Arts Studio. This year, Zaman was selected as the Open Buffalo Emerging Artist and was also awarded a New York State Council on the Arts Decentralization Individual Artist Grant. Zaman has participated in many community-based initiatives, including Common Ground Connections, part of a nationwide interfaith campaign facilitating bringing communities together through the arts.
