Buffalo, NY – Argus Gallery is pleased to announce Pretty Ugly, an exhibition of works by Buffalo-based artist Skylar Borgstrom.

Borgstrom is an interdisciplinary artist working in painting, sculpture, and installation to explore the ongoing shifts within intersectional feminism, specifically in the United States since the 1960s. Paintings seduce through vivid otherworldly color while subjects repulse. Sculptures utilize the uncanny, encouraging viewers to stare at what we often ignore.

Pretty Ugly showcases a series of paintings that utilize humor, the ridiculous, and the mundane, to examine the historical and present-day ways that women are silenced.  These works employ a loose and painterly style, which lends itself to the manipulation and exaggeration of human form. Subjects are warped, covered, silenced. Viewers are asked to consider the ways in which the “silence is golden” rule applies to women in the boardroom, the bedroom, and from the oval office to the street. To be without a voice is to be excluded from humanity and self-determination. “Men are allowed to speak any way they want to and are not criticized for it, whereas women are expected to act, to speak, in a certain way,” says Borgstrom, and identifies some common examples of this double standard:

“Still, even now, when a woman says something uncomfortable… she is routinely portrayed as delusional, a malicious conspirator, a pathological liar, a whiner who doesn’t recognize it’s all in fun, or all of the above.”
