Buffalo, NY – Eleven Twenty Projects is pleased to announce Figment, an exhibition of new paintings by renowned artist, W.C. Maggio. The exhibition will begin on November 2nd and will continue through December 15th, 2018.
Maggio’s newest body of work brings us three distinctive series: Aftermath, Torn Fences, and Things Not Seen. The latter may be the title most apt to describe the entire group of paintings – they are not about seeking out representation, but the direct, emotional response to the work, and the cerebral corners into which these responses lead.
When considering the full catalog of Maggio’s abstract paintings, each series tends to embrace a certain set of marks, made by the artist through layering and deducting paint with various tools. Within the past year the artist has blended many of these styles into single works – allowing for even more depth and dynamic play in each painting. Another element this new work delivers is a third color to the traditional black and white – grey. Again, this brings new aesthetic intensity – both through soft additions and hard lines, which serve to highlight the deep black areas of paint.
With the consistently transcendental nature of Maggio’s process, Figment showcases top tier abstract paintings that pull you involuntarily into their profundity. Mesmeric concepts of time, labor, and distance, as well as other less communicable aspects of the human experience, wash over the space in monochromatic fields of texture. This exhibition reveals the considerable time Maggio has spent developing an extensive vocabulary of mark making, which has resulted in a compilation of intellectually stimulating and visually satisfying works.
A pictorial catalog will be available upon request at the start of the exhibition.
